Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon & blends
Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot have been long been recognised as ideal blending companions.
These varietals are commonly combined to produce well-balanced wines that feature the strong backbone of Cabernet Sauvignon, and the supple juiciness of Merlot.
All of the fruit for Villa Maria’s Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot blends is grown in the Hawkes Bay, home to New Zealand’s Bordeaux varieties.
Regional characteristics
A significant portion of our grapes are grown in close proximity to the famous Gimblett Road growing area in the Hawkes Bay.
The free draining gravelly soil here has a devigourating effect on vines and results in red wines with enhanced structure, flavour and colour.
Our Hawkes Bay Cabernet Sauvignon
Produces wines with distinctive black cherry, cassis and violets characteristics.
Our Hawkes Bay Merlot
Produces smooth, fruit-filled wines with deep blackberry, raspberry and plum characteristics.
Food matching
