An exciting white grape with concentrated flavors and aromas.

Viognier (pronounced Vee-on-yay) is a grape variety that is difficult to grow, but has the ability to produce exciting white wines with concentrated flavors and aromas.

Styles of Viognier can range from light and fresh, to full-bodied examples with textural mouthfeel.

Viognier wines are highly perfumed with floral (honeysuckle and orange blossom) and spicy aromas and have, rich succulent flavors of ripe apricots and peaches, and a rich, round finish.

Regional characteristics

At Villa Maria we grow all of our Viognier on the North Island's East Coast regions of Gisborne and Hawkes Bay.

Here Viognier grapes perform well due to the warm temperatures, high sunshine hours and low to moderately fertile soils.

The resulting wines display hallmark Viognier aromas of apricot, honeysuckle and spice, with a textured palate and rich, dry finish.

Food matching

Viognier is a fantastic food wine, it matches perfectly with spicy food including Moroccan, Turkish, Middle Eastern and Asian influenced cuisine, particularly Thai.
