Ollie Powrie is Chief Viticulturist at Villa Maria Estate. He has been with the company since 2007 and oversees fruit supply from over 2000 hectares of producing vineyards in Marlborough, Nelson, Waipara, Hawkes Bay, Gisborne and Auckland. Ollie is based in the Hawkes Bay and heads a team of Regional Viticulturists, Vineyard Managers and Grower Liaison Officers throughout the country.
Ollie graduated first with a BSc in Ecology in 1996 and later with a Bachelor of Viticulture from E.I.T. and Charles Sturt University in 2002. He began his career managing 40 hectares of established vineyards and developing 20 hectares of bare land, both in the Gimblett Gravels region. In 2003 worked in Rhone Valley, France gaining a wide variety of experience in vineyards from the Languedoc to Chateauneuf du Pape.
Ollie is obsessed with wine quality and sees a hugely exciting time ahead for Villa Maria. He is passionate about growing grapes in the most sustainable way that enhances the land and local environment. A big part of this is the movement towards organic vineyard management, enhancing the biodiversity of the vineyards and managing the vineyards to have less reliance on irrigation.
