About Us
Over 60 years of winemaking
Villa Maria's 60 year journey at the forefront of New Zealand's wine industry has shaped the company as it stands today. Our extensive portfolio is one the most geographically and stylistically diverse and highly-awarded range of premium wines by any New Zealand producer, fuelling consumer adoration and success across the globe.
Throughout the 1960s Villa Maria was a one-man band. In 1961, at just 21 years of age, Sir George Fistonich leased five acres of land from his father in Mangere, Auckland and started off with just an acre of vines. The first wine under the name Villa Maria in 1962 was made with grapes harvested from this block. Today, Villa Maria is a globally recognised and adored for its bold, expressive and exceptional New Zealand wines.

At Villa Maria we're known for making bold, industry-changing moves.
Here are some of the great milestones and achievements we have accomplished since day one.
Our New Icon Attorney Pinot Noir
Our Attorney Vineyard is one of Marlborough’s premier Pinot Noir sites which, in the 2019 growing season, presented us with an extraordinary parcel of fruit and the promise of a very special wine. To celebrate over 60 years of Villa Maria’s incredible winemaking story, we are proud to elevate this Attorney Pinot Noir as a new Villa Maria ‘Icon’. A powerful statement of Marlborough Pinot Noir, the vine maturity, natural balance and biodiversity of our Attorney Vineyard produces single vineyard Pinot Noir with beguiling elegance and complexity.
The first impression of Attorney is stern, this is a wine that wants to be noticed, however as it opens up you should find ample black cherry fruit, bold tannins and subtle graphite minerality from the oak supporting the wine and adding freshness.
